Mrs M dug some holes in the garden. We put the potatoes in the holes. Jessica and Islay put tags in the places the potatoes were after they had covered them up.Then the girls watered the potatoes.I love planting potatoes.

Our Roots are in the Andes

We are learning about potatoes. We made potato people from the Andes. Some people brought potatoes. We drew a pattern on some material and cut a hole in the middle for the poncho. We put the potatoes through the poncho.Mrs M stuck ice-cream sticks into the potato for the legs. Mrs M made little hats for them. We made the Andes in the sandpit. The whole class played with their potato people in the sandpit.
By Stacy, Casey, Islay and Jelena.

After that we wrote about where potatoes came from.
This is called HISTORY......(a university word)
Here are two pieces of writing........

8000 years ago the potatoes got found. They were in the Andes in South America . The potatoes can be grown in all different places. The men were going to get gold and silver. But they found the potatoes. They had come from Europe to South America. That is how we have potatoes.
By Casey.

8,000 years ago two men sailed around the world from europe to south America. In south america they found gold, silver and potatoes. The potatoes grew in some mountains called the Andes. In the Andes there are lots of gaps for water and potatoes to grow in. So that's how potatoes got discovered. All around the world the countries found out about potatoes.

We are getting these potatoes ready to plant.
We have put them in a warm place in our room.
We are going to plant them on Friday.

When Mrs M got the plant out of the compost we saw it was growing from a potato.
Two little potatoes were growing off a potato root.
Then someone saw a very small potato as well. It was the size of a spider's egg.

Above the Ground/Below the Ground

We named all the vegetables we could think of.
Mrs M wrote these on a special piece of paper.
Then we sorted the vegetable pictures and decided if we ate the bit that grew under the ground or above the ground.
