Saving the Rainforest

We did jobs at home to earn some money to buy some trees for a rainforest in East Timor. So far
We have $33. Today we gave the money to Amber's Mum. She works at the bank in Lincoln. She is going to send it to East Timor today. Today we will buy 25 trees.

Kara thought we should make posters, so we did.
by Room 3 students.

Mrs M is very proud of you all for working so hard to help the rainforest.
Well done.

In Room 3 we sort our paper from other rubbish. Mrs Rooks puts the paper into the recycling bin. Last Monday our recycling bins were not by the worm farms. They were out at the gate. We went and looked inside them. We could see some of the paper from Room 3 in the recycling bins and the paper towels from the boys and girls rooms.

We wondered:

Where does the truck take the paper to?

What happens to the paper?

How does it get made into more paper?

PAPER MAKING

Yesterday we learnt how to make paper out of recycled paper. There were two containers with paper pulp in them. There were tea leaves in one container and in the other container it had petals. Then we had to put the frames on the bottom of the container and we had to lift it up .We had to drain it. Then we had to place it on the lino. Next we took the top frame off and then we took the middle frame off. At the end we sponged the paper to get all the water out so it wasn’t runny and it won’t break.

WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE RAINFORESTS

The tropical rainforest is getting burnt down and cut down. The animals are losing there homes. If the plants die the insects will die and it goes on and on until all the animals die. We are trying to save the tropical rainforest.

Water

Another story about water, by Amber

Room 3 was talking about pollution.
We have got letters in the class.
Kara and me went to Mrs K.
We asked Mrs K, "How do you know the water in the fountains is clean?"
Then we went back to Mrs M.
Mrs M said then, "What did she say?"
Kara and me said, "You have to send the water to another place and it gets tested."

Then on Tuesday Mrs M was reading about two frogs Lester and Clyde.
They lived at a sparkling pond.
One of the frogs played a trick.
So the frog looked for another home.
He saw a pond. It was polluted, and he went on.
He saw another polluted pond.
Then he went home.

Pollution

Now that we know lots of things about water we have been wondering and asking questions. JoJo told us she saw a dead swan and chicken in the river after the earthquake.
We wondered.......
Why were the birds dead?
What does it mean if water is polluted?

Today we had a book called "Lester and Clyde".
It helped us learn about water pollution.

Cody wrote a story about it:

There were two frogs that were named Lester and Clyde who lived in a pond.
Then one day Clyde fell asleep on a branch, and while he was asleep Lester croaked loudly as he could, and Clyde woke up.
After Lester went to a polluted pond and he got stuck. Then he went to another pond, and it was polluted too. It was so stinky that he went home.

The Water Cycle

Today we learnt about the water cycle.
We watched two videos on Youtube.
The first can be accessed by going into Youtube, click videos and write "World Ahoy-the Water Cycle" in the search bar. The second can be accessed by the same procedure, with "The Water Cycle David Bydlowski and Science Explosion" in the search bar.
Some of the material on Youtube is not appropriate for children so Mums and Dads, please monitor this.

Some of the students are learning about writing explanations.
Here are two explanations about the water cycle.

How the Water Cycle works

The water cycle goes around.

When the sun shines on the water, the water evaporates.

It goes up into the sky and into the clouds.

When the rain falls it goes into the river and back into the sea.

And it starts again.

by Amber

How the Water Cycle works

The water cycle is about water.

The sun shone at the ocean and the water evaporated to the clouds.

Then it rained into the ocean.

The water cycle goes again and again.
