What is a carbon Footprint?

Today we unjumbled another sentence.
It said:
A carbon footprint is the mark that is left behind when we don't look after our world.
How do we not look after our world?
  • by polluting the air
  • by littering
  • by cutting down trees

What can we do?

This weekend for Homework we are going to think of something that we can do to help our world.

ACID RAIN

Dylan had told us that smoke from the muffler of the car goes up in the air and becomes acid rain, and kills all the plants.
We did an experiment to find out if acid rain would stop seeds growing.
a

We found out lots about carbon footprints. It's hard to understand

Cows and Methane Gas

When Connie told us that the cows "windies" were helping to make a hole in the ozone layer we asked Korina to tell us all about how this could be. Islay told us that the ozone layer was like a blanket over the world. The next day Gavin brought some cows to graze right outside our school. We went to check them out.
Callum took a photo of one of the cows, and wrote this explanation.......

COWS
Cows have four stomachs.
It looks like they only have one or two.
Their four stomachs have to work hard to digest their food.
Cows make a special gas called methane gas.
It comes out the rear end and the front end.
by Callum

Jessica M's friends thought her writing sounded like a poem.
What do you think?

COWS
Cows eat food.
The cows digest the food.
Then the cows burp
and the cows pass wind.
The cows pass wind
and the burp from the cows
go up to the atmosphere.

CARBON FOOTPRINT

Yesterday Mrs M asked us,
"What is a footprint?"
We talked with a buddy about all the things we had done
and learnt about footprints.
Then Mrs M gave us an envelope with words in it.
We had to make a sentence with the words.
The sentence was :
Our footprint is the mark that we leave behind.

Then Mrs M asked us a REALLY BIG QUESTION.
Mrs M asked us,
"What is a carbon footprint?"

Then Mrs M asked us,
"How can you find out what a carbon footprint is?"
We had to think of different ways.
Then we had to find out for homework.
Mrs M keeps telling us we are 21st century learners.

FOOTPRINT FOSSIL

I made a footprint.
We used dough and we rolled it.
Then we used the rolling pin.
We used the spatula , and used the oven to put the tray in.
Now we have done the recipe.
Now we have a footprint fossil.

by Dylan

Jessica Y. is rolling the dough.

Jessica M. is making her footprint fossil.

MUSEUM VISIT

We went to the museum . We met a guy called Andrew. He took us to the dinosaur room to learn about dinosaurs. We sat on some seats. We had to think of what a dinosaur was. Then we had point to the things that were dinosaurs. Out of 19 things that could happen to dinosaurs, there would only be 2 fossils made. We learnt that flying dinosaurs were not dinosaurs neither were sea ones. Then we had to find 2 fossil footprints. The first one was the big one. It could fit 7 people in it. The other one was small and it was harder to find. We learnt where to find a fossil in the North Island in rocks.

Playing Golf in the Sandpit

We played golf in the sandpit.
I could not get the ball out.
Then Mrs M asked me
if I just wanted to get out
and rake my footprints away.
It was a sunny day and the sandpit was wet.
It was also soft and we sank into the sand,
and that's how we made footprints.

Footprints in the Frost

On Wednesday Mrs M. said we can go to the back field
to make footprints in the frost.
I felt cold. I got wet shoes.
I went right and left.
We stood on the frost and the grass went green.
We went back to class.
On the way back to class we made footprints on
the concrete because we are learning about footprints.
It was fun.

Our topic is footprints.
My favourite part about it was when my buddy painted my foot.
It was green.
We put the foot with paint on the paper.
My buddy was Callum.
We made it into a picture.
My picture was a moa.
I thought the shape was good enough to make it into a moa.
I drew the rest of the body and legs and feathers.
